Helping California Main Streets Weather The Storm
By: Amanda Elliott, Senior Program Officer and Director of California Programs, Main Street America
Dear CAMS Community,
The recent winter storms that have swept through the state have brought unprecedented high winds and rainfall, as well as related widespread flooding, mudslides, and power outages in many areas, especially those in Northern California. Many of our Main Street communities and their neighbors have been impacted, and California remains in a challenging period where multiple dangerous storms will make landfall over the next week.
Please know that the California Main Street and Main Street America teams are thinking of you during these challenging times, and that we are here to help provide support in any way that we can.
We've gathered a few timely resources that we hope may offer some assistance in your efforts to keep yourself and your community safe and informed, and to respond to any damage:
Cal Office of Emergency Services (OES). Sign-up for alters from local officials, 2023 January Winter Storm Resources, Latest News
Treatment of Flood-Damaged Older and Historic Buildings. A free publication from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help building owners minimize structural and cosmetic flood damage. It contains general advice written to cover a wide variety of buildings with varying degrees of flood damage. Download the guide here.
Main Street America Network. Connect with your other Main Street organizations on The Point, Main Street America’s online member discussion forum, where local leaders can post questions and share ideas and resources with one another.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Has recently received authorization to provide emergency protective measures in most of the state’s counties. Financial resources may be available at a later date. Learn more.
For those of you traveling to our annual conference in February or if you're already in the San Diego area, we invite you to register for our upcoming FREE in-person workshop on disaster preparedness, presented by our partners at the National Parks Service. All the details are below.
Wishing you all the best,
Amanda Elliot
